The ground floor of La Passoniere features a large living room under an open ‘cathedral’ ceiling with a wood-burning fire and fully-equipped kitchen area. The former hayloft, which covers half the first floor level, has a bedroom and an enclosed shower room with toilet. La Passoniere stands at the end of a country lane – no passing traffic to disturb those wine-induced slumbers – in grounds of almost three-quarters of an acre. The only thing likely to wake you in the morning is an occasional tractor or a panting spaniel trying to stop birds landing on his property! Outside, La Passoniere’s semi-enclosed mature garden has separate sets of outdoor furniture and barbecues for those lazy summer days and evenings when even the shopaholic needs a rest.

With so many rivers, lakes and streams in the area, it's no surprise fishing is a passion. The quiet country roads and lanes make bike riding a pleasure, while walks are well-marked and plentiful. The leisure park at Ambrières offers swimming, canoeing, sailing and archery and horse riding can be arranged. Boats can also be hired in Mayenne for a leisurely trip down the river. For any budding Tiger Woods, there are golf courses at Laval, Vire and the spa town of Bagnoles, two on the way to St Malo and one near Vitré, which is set in the grounds of a magnificent chateau. There’s even a chance for you to play petanque during the summer months as most villages have competitions that are open to all. Visit the private garden in La Pellerine – between Ernée and Fougères – and marvel at a succession of small, enclosed gardens around a 16th Century house, each with a different theme. Ernée is a pleasant market town, while Fougères with its shops and famous castle has cascading fountains and a relaxing walk in the riverside park. You can even go on a gargoyle hunt at Lassay les Chateaux, where the castle dominates the tiny streets of old houses. There’s a rose garden there which, at the last count, had more than 300 varieties of rose. Apart from the ruins of the old castle and the keep, the ramparts and towers of Domfront (originating from the 11th Century) give you great views of the surrounding countryside. In summer there are medieval festivals, with people dressing up as lords and ladies, princes and princesses, stilt-walkers, troubadours and good, old-fashioned games. Enjoy! St Malo, medieval Dinan and Cancale, with its famous seafood restaurants, are only 90 minutes away – as are Bayeux, home to the world-famous tapestry, and the Normandy Invasion beaches. Even the chateaux and vineyards of the Loire Valley are just a morning's drive away. Everything is there, just waiting for you. Go on, have a go, you won’t regret it.
Wildlife spectacular! La Passionere stands alone in acres of open farmland but it's not just cows and sheep you'll see during your holiday. The birdlife here is fantastic. Buzzards, kestrels and sparrow hawks share the skies with owls, robins and blue tits. We even have the secretive hoopoe paying us a visit. You can't mistake its distinctive whoop, whoop call. Red squirrels scamper around the garden collecting acorns and bats flit across the evening sky in search of insects. For anyone interested in wildlife, La Passoniere is the place to be.
Looking for your own place in France? Situated right on the borders of Normandy, Brittany and Pays de la Loire, La Passoniere is the perfect base for your property hunt. With the nearest Channel port of Caen and Dinard airport both just 90 minutes away – and the seaside even closer – you will be ideally placed to search for your own piece of French heaven. Let your hosts Jane and Mick give you the benefit of their house-hunting experiences, or perhaps they can help you contact local English-speaking estate agents. Whatever you are looking for, there's nothing like a bit of local knowledge to help you on the way!
